Hello, Integrated Building Systems community! My name is Kendall Amodeo, and I am a summer marketing intern for Integrated Building Systems. I’m from Powell, Ohio, and I am entering my senior year at Purdue University where I have two majors in Professional Writing and Environmental Science. There are so many paths to explore in the Professional Writing industry, including marketing! This summer, I was looking for an opportunity to learn more about marketing, and I was thrilled to be welcomed with open arms at Integrated Building Systems as their summer intern.
Over the past 8 weeks, my job has been to assist our Business Development Manager, Emily Chapman, with marketing content for the next year. If you speak to anyone at Integrated Building Systems, they will tell you that the staff here wears many hats. My hope with this internship was to wear my own hat to the best of my ability – creating marketing content so that the rest of the staff can focus on what they do best.
Lessons Learned
Working with Integrated Building Systems has been nothing short of wonderful. In a working society where interns are often hired for coffee runs and menial tasks, I was given real projects that had a tangible impact in the company. I was also included as a relevant voice in the process. I attended meetings, gave and received feedback, and collaborated with employees in all departments. Most importantly, I strengthened my skills in marketing, technical writing, and digital design. I was given creative freedom on most of the projects I worked on, so it was both a ton of fun and a great learning opportunity to experiment with designs, wording, and angles. This internship was also my first experience working in an urban office environment – it’s been so interesting learning about corporate lingo, getting to know my coworkers, and becoming accustomed to the office culture.
Memories Made
Though I’m sure anyone working at Integrated Building Systems would say the same, the best aspect of working here is the company culture. Being the first marketing intern that Integrated Building Systems has ever had, I was initially worried about how I would be received, but there was no need. The staff is incredibly kind and overwhelmingly supportive – all of them were thrilled to have an intern on the team. I have sent dozens of emails over my time here, and each was respected and given an enthusiastic response. Throughout the day, coworkers will pop into my office just to chat and see how I’m doing. We don’t simply go to work, go home, and repeat. The culture at Integrated Building Systems is centered on building genuine connections, both internally and externally.
My favorite memory from working for the company was former Vice President Bill Helland’s retirement party. Though I hadn’t even met Bill at the time, I wanted a chance to get to know my coworkers a little better. The event was certainly one to remember! One of my coworkers told me about his impressive vegetable garden, another talked about their passion for horror movies, and we all shared a laugh when Bill’s closest family and friends roasted him in their speeches.
Thank You
I am beyond grateful to Integrated Building Systems for entrusting me to create promotional content for them. The experience I gained from this internship is infinitely valuable, and I intend to use all that I’ve learned as a strong foundation for my career. I am incredibly thankful for the unwavering support from the entire Integrated Building Systems staff, and especially Emily. Thank you all for including me in the family!
